Mission and Vision
Learning from the past, excelling in the present and evolving into the future, Maponya prides itself on supplying outstanding legal services to current and future clients. With specialised knowledge, highly skilled lawyers and extremely efficient support staff, Maponya continues to expand its reputation as a premier law firm both in South Africa and beyond.
In defining who and what we are, we pay much cognisance to the firm’s vision and mission statement. It encapsulates our heritage, our culture and our values in just 54 words. These are the words that drive us to continue to achieve excellence on behalf of our clients. And the words that inspire us to make a meaningful difference in shaping the economy and social development in South Africa.
Learning from the Past
With our nascent democracy, under the steady hand of President Mandela barely a year old, 1995 was an exhilarating year for South Africans. Expectations were high, and the excitement was palpable. Unleaded fuel sold at R1:88 a litre. Less than R4 would buy you a US dollar. And what was destined to become one of the most successful black owned and managed law firms in the country, Maponya Attorneys, was duly established.
From the outset, founding partner, Phatudi Maponya, had a clear vision in mind. He was determined to build a law firm comprising a highly skilled team of attorneys and support staff that would be more representative of the country’s demographics than any sizable South African law firm had ever achieved.
And the growth of the firm would be dependent on merit, professionalism and personal service, which, collectively, would build a reputation within the legal fraternity that was second to none.
Our First Accolades
Maponya’s reputation is bolstered by the many accolades it received over the intervening years.

Voted one of 12 Leading Commercial Law Firms in SA

Crowned Top Empowered Corporate
For 2011 at the Oliver Empowerment Awards after which we were nominated as one of South Africa’s Top Empowerment Companies, in 2010
As the firm’s reputation spread, the list of clients grew exponentially. In the private sector Maponya represented companies across all sectors of industry, most notably the larger mining houses and financial institutions.
In the public sector, the firm’s track record secured business from municipalities, provincial and national government, State Owned Enterprises, and even African Heads of State. As Maponya’s reputation spread beyond the country’s borders, alliances were developed with global law firms such as Linklaters to work on international trade and privatisation projects.
Excelling in the Present...
